Going in Sick

I came down with a cold late Friday night and by Monday morning it was getting really serious. Friends told me to stay home, but I knew that day I had 4 classes, and had to administer interview tests for students. So, I went.
I arrived quite sick, which everyone noticed. I prepared to sleep [...]

In Class - New Karuta!

Students are given a bunch of cards with questions on them. In groups they have to listen, recognize the question, find and take it. Same as real Karuta. But, they only get one point to get the question, and read the question. They get another 2 points for answering the question. If they can’t answer, [...]

Valentine’s Day Around the World

バレンタインデー
Around the World
Valentine’s Day or Saint Valentine’s Day, is a holiday celebrated on February 14 by many people around the world. It is estimated that approximately one billion (1,000,000,000) valentines cards are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year after Christmas. It is estimated that women purchase [...]

Singles Awareness Day - is WRONG

Singles Awareness Day - I just don’t see the humor in this at all.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singles_Awareness_Day
Honestly, that just sounds fucking depressing. Celebration AGAINST happy people, AGAINST love? Isn’t this just bitterness, jealousy, spite and other negative weaknesses taken out on others, finding a small measure of tainted joy in trying to ruin the happiness of our fellow [...]

Volleyball Club - Challenging the Norm

The gym is precious space. There are more clubs than gym space. The basketball and volleyball clubs make due with space in the sand lot, but the conditions aren’t good enough to have a really good practice. In the gym at this JHS, half the space goes to the badminton club. Sometimes, especially on rain [...]

In Class: Writing Commercials

Assignment:
Commercial. Draw a pic of product, show, etc. Then, in English, write the ad for it.
Result:
Students rarely wrote in English. Too much time spent talking in groups, or trying to think and often failing to do so. Students are too unaccustomed to be creative, and too shy. Groups of 6 are too big. Yet, [...]

Valentine’s Day Project

I made a Valentine’s Day display from coloured paper and posted it up on the wall where students and staff will see it. Mostly a bunch of hearts in different colors - red for love, yellow boy-girl for friendship, pink for girl friendship, and blue for boy friendship. I included a history of Valentine’s and [...]

New School Broom

In each class we try to think up a whole new activity. This means some work, some don’t, but you hope to average out long term. However, constantly learning new games, activities is annoying to students, and slows productivity in such a short time period as one class. Better to repeat activities so that they [...]

In Class: Multi-Author Mini-Stories

Activity
3rd Years
Split into groups of 6. Each group writes a sentence starting with a provided starter sentence. Then they pass their paper to the next group and write another sentence. Repeat in order to create a different story on each paper.
Groups of 6 are too big. Many students don’t participate. While the chance to [...]
